There's nothing pretentious about either a 300 or a 400 series though. All quite normal rather conservative commuter cars. Mostly driven by the elderly, especially the 300 series. The 300 series was still RWD too.

Maybe linked to an idea of Volvo being a premium brand, but the badge being on a mundane product. Of course, the same thing can be said about numerous other brands. The line always made me laugh. They also summed up the 240 with “antique cars for antique dealers” (a character in a TV who who had that profession drove one).
